CAPE MAY, N.J. – A local woman was named the Coast Guard’s Civilian Employee of the Year for 2012 and presented an award from the Commandant of the Coast Guard Friday.

Ms. Jeannie Sansone, a civilian employee at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May and resident of Lower Township, N.J., was selected from the Coast Guard’s more than 8,800 civilian employees as the Civilian of the Year for her contributions to the service’s missions.

“I’m flattered and humbled to have been selected for such a prestigious award,” said Sansone. “I couldn’t have done it without the help of my family, friends and colleagues.”

Sansone currently serves with the Facility Engineering staff aboard Training Center Cape May and is critical to maintaining the facility’s infrastructure, which is responsible for training more than 80 percent of the Coast Guard’s workforce and home to 13 tenant commands. Sansone provides much needed administrative support to the maintenance team including maintaining a comprehensive property inventory and managing spending and accounting for a more than $8 million budget.

One of the highlights of Sansone’s performance in 2012 was her ability to implement new Coast Guard Real Property policies, which required Sansone to inventory 86 buildings, 174 housing units and numerous structures across more than 352 acres of the training center. To properly document the real property aboard training Center Cape May, Sansone had to work more than 40 hours of overtime physically measuring the property, use GPS technology to mark each building and capture photo documentation of the facilities.

“Ms. Sansone’s work on the real property project aboard the Coast Guard’s fifth largest base set the standard for the rest of the Coast Guard to follow,” said Cmdr. Robert Hueller, the Facility Engineer for Training Center Cape May.

Sansone was presented an award by Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert J. Papp for her efforts during a ceremony in Washington.

Sansone’s mother and father, Andrew and Lovlene Sansone, currently reside in Waretown, N.J.
