Body of Missing Coast Guardsman Found

PORTLAND, MAINE – A body found yesterday in the water near the Maine State Pier has been identified as Coast Guard Seaman Vincent Colon, 24, of Queens, New York.

A Sea Tow operator found Colon around 7:40 a.m., yesterday and notified local and state agencies. A 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station South Portland was sent to recover Colon’s body.

Vincent Colon was a seaman stationed on the Portland, Maine-based Coast Guard Cutter Marcus Hanna.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Seaman Colon’s family, friends, and co-workers,” said Capt. Jim Rendon, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “As rescuers, we each feel the loss of anybody to a maritime tragedy, but Vinny was one of our own, and this hits particularly close to home.”

Eight separate state and local agencies, in addition to numerous Coast Guard crews and Good Samaritans, helped search for Colon after he fell overboard from the Casablanca, a local passenger vessel, Sept. 2.
