Boater detained for operating under the influence of alcohol

NEW YORK – A 39-year-old boat operator from Jericho, N.Y., was detained for boating under the influence of alcohol by a boarding team from Coast Guard Station Montauk, N.Y., Saturday, July 9, 2011.

At approximately 6 p.m., a member stationed at Coast Guard Station Montauk observed a boater operating a vessel at a high speed through no-wake zones and transiting dangerously close to other vessels in Montauk Harbor.

A boatcrew launched from Station Montauk to where the boater was returning his rented vessel. The boatcrew witnessed the operator hit another vessel while attempting to moor.

The boarding team conducted field sobriety tests, which the boat operator failed. The Coast Guard boarding officer cited the operator with negligent and intoxicated operations.

Easthampton Police Department arrested and took the boat operator into custody.
