Air Station Sitka rescues lost Coast Guardsman near Sitka

KODIAK, Alaska – A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka crew located and hoisted a lost Coast Guardsman Wednesday near Redoubt Bay eight miles south of Sitka.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Jason Weeks, 24, was hunting with two other Coast Guardsmen when he became separated.

After receiving a call from a member of Weeks’ hunting party, Coast Guard Sector Juneau controllers directed the launch of an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Sitka. Alaska State Troopers also launched a Sitka Mountain Rescue boat to search.

The helicopter located the uninjured Weeks at about 3:20 p.m. and reunited him with his hunting party.

“This is the sixth Coast Guard hunter rescued in Alaska since August,” said Capt. Mike Neussl, Chief of Staff, 17th Coast Guard District, “We want our personnel to enjoy all Alaska has to offer and are glad these six hunters were safely recovered. We continually emphasize risk management and preparedness to enhance recreational safety, just as we do on the job.”

The Coast Guard encourages all outdoor enthusiasts to put an emphasis on safety and preparedness by taking multiple means of communication and signaling devices such as radios, cell phones, transceivers and flares, and being prepared for the unexpected.

I just wanted to give you my sincere thanks for locating my son when you did. Who knows what could have happened if he would have had to spend the night there in his wet clothes and chilling temperatures. I really appreciate what you guys do. Thank God for all of you.
