Air Station Miami hosts Education Fair

Coast Guard District 7 NewsMIAMI – More than 50 colleges and universities attended an education fair for Coast Guard members and their families at Coast Guard Air Station Miami on Wednesday,

Coordinated by the air station’s Family Services Department, the fair offered an array of educational choices. Representatives of schools that provide military affiliates with financial assistance and accept Coast Guard credits were in attendance. Miami’s Northern Recruiting Command was also present to explain enlisted to officer programs.

Captain Kimball, commanding officer of Air Station Miami, expressed the importance of continuing education and thanked all schools in attendance during the inauguration speech.

Since 2008, Air Station Miami has processed approximately $1 million in Tuition Assistance for 742 students. In 2010, the Air Station had 174 students and already this year with a little less than a month to go 181 students used the assistance. In the past year, five people obtained a degree. The Family Services Department proctored 21 college-level exams, administered 26 Defense Language Proficiency Tests, and supervised approximately 300 end-of-course tests.
