Coast Guard suspends search for missing swimmer off South Padre Island

65 CorpusCORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Coast Guard search and rescue coordinators suspended the search for a missing swimmer off South Padre Island Monday at 6:57 p.m.

Mohammed Alsubaie, 22, went missing Saturday in the waters off the Bridgeport Condominiums, near the 300 block of Padre Island Blvd.

“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Alsubaie,” said Chief Warrant Officer Barerra, the search and rescue mission coordinator at Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi for this case. “Despite an exhaustive search with our helicopter and rescue boat crews, we were unable to locate him after this comprehensive and dedicated effort.”

The Sector Corpus Christi command center coordinated over 35 hours of searching by MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi and rescue boats from Station South Padre Island. The crews completed a total of 16 sorties with a combined search area total of more than 232 square miles, which included both U.S. and Mexican waters.
