St. Petersburg, Fla.— Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg crewmembers hosted an open house for the community, and launched a new Coast Guard app for smartphones, Saturday.

The open house kicked off National Safe Boating Week and raised boating safety awareness for the St. Petersburg community. Nationwide, from May 16 – 22, the Coast Guard is celebrating NSBW and urging boaters to stay safe on the water along with reinforcing the importance of wearing a life jacket.

The open house also showcased the Coast Guard’s missions and capabilities for the local community. Crewmembers from the sector educated the public about the Coast Guard’s roles and missions, and th public was encouraged to tour Coast Guard cutters, boats and aircraft.

In addition, the Coast Guard unveiled a new smartphone app, CG Mobile, which provides mariners with boating safety information, including float plans, safety equipment, weather and safety checks.
