ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Three people were rescued by the Coast Guard Monday after their 30-foot sailing vessel became disabled due to engine failure 80 miles west of Tampa.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 7th District in Miami received an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon distress signal at 8:50 a.m. Monday. A good Samaritan arrived on scene with the sailing vessel at approximately 9:30 a.m. and relayed information to the watchstanders.

An aircrew aboard an MH 60-Jayawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater was launched to the location of distressed mariners. Once on scene, the Jayhawk’s crew spotted the sailing vessel Grateful with three people aboard.

The Coast Guard Cutter Nantucket, a 110-foot Island Class patrol boat homeported in St. Petersburg, was launched at approximately 11 a.m. arrived on scene at 5:30 p.m., and took the vessel in tow.

“It’s a good thing they had a working EPIRB with them,” said Chief Petty Officer Ryan Vess, a search and rescue coordinator at Sector St. Petersburg. “Being 80 miles offshore, it was the only method they could alert the Coast Guard of their distress.”

The Nantucket crew plans to transfer the tow operation to a commercial towing agency once closer to land. There are no reported injuries or medical concerns.

This rescue involved my father, along with two close friends that were on board the sailing vessel. My father, Cleve , is a very experienced boater and has made the journey across the Gulf of Mexico more times than I can count. Circumstances can change in an instant, and I, along with my family are so grateful to the captain and crew of the Coast Guard Cutter, the Nantucket, which handled their rescue. We cannot thank them and the USCG enough. Thank you for bringing my father and friends safely to shore and thanks to all the men and women of the Coast Guard for their service!!!!

Would the Rescue 21 system work this far offshore? How about a PLB? Single Sideband radio?
