Sea Scouts learn seamanship, maritime law enforcement at Coast Guard Sector San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – The Coast Guard hosted the Sea Scout’s annual Safety at Sea event at Coast Guard Sector San Francisco this weekend.

Bay Area Coast Guard members and local firefighters led twenty-six Sea Scout groups, ages 13-17, in hands-on safety, shipboard damage control, fire fighting and law enforcement training.

“This is the most fun learning opportunity we have in scouting — it is a great chance to meet and build camaraderie among scout troops from all over the country,” said Carl Shellhorn, skipper of the S.S.S. Chaser from Napa, Calif. “The Coast Guard has been fantastic in helping us provide this event to our youth — we couldn’t do it without them.”

Since the first Safety At Sea event in 1993, the partnership has provided an opportunity for sea scouts to work directly with Coast Guard men and women, tour Coast Guard cutters and offer adult leaders scout-specific and technical training skills.
